Combinata si o no?

During the last world championships of artistic skating in Reus, Spain, the Cipa together with the Firs has considered, among the different proposals, to eliminate the title of the “Champion of Combined ”. The decision has caused a widespread discontent and an intense debate documented by the major social networks.
Let´s try together to understand the reasons of this decision by CIPA: until the eighties, the World Artistic Skating Champion in Single, was the athlete, winner of the Combined. In those years there were no separate rankings of Free and Figures, and all athletes were competing for the title of Combined. In those years the combined system resulted very limiting, so that it was developed the model that is still applied and that ratifies within the two disciplines of the Single (Free and Figures) three separate rankings and three World Champions (Free, Figures and Combined).
In the past, the award of the medal for the Combined, had a reason: to award the athletes who excelled in both specialties. Today this title is no longer justified. The “sporting” principle that can legitimize the Combined Champion doesn’t exist anymore. For several years there have been on the world stage, multi-medalistsathletes who, thanks to perfect exercises in one of the two disciplines (Free or Figures), have won the medal of Combined in spite of a very poor performance in the other one. How can we explain to the ‘pure’ spectator this apparent anomaly? Even the insiders, sometimes, remains speechless when looking at the combined placements.
Several times we have seen performances in the two competitions that were openly attempts aimed merely to achieve a medal. This used to happen mostly for Figures competition, where the small number of participants, however, allowed to gain a podium in the Combined (see. male podiums). This policy, important for the federations in an understandable and justifiable perspective of national prestige, becomes detrimental if we look forward to a dialogue with the International Olympic Committee, for the involvement of the Artistic Roller Skating in the Olympic Games….It is obvious that today the synergies of CIPA and FIRS go into this new direction, towards an evolution of our sport, which needs to be socially more visible and to summon more viewers as possible.
In a time in which every resource should be weighed and measured, it is right to raise questions with clarity and honesty. The current urgency, that involves all the components of the world of the artistic roller skating, is to present simple, understandable, transparent and direct sport exercises that can comply the needs of the communication channels such as television and the major media. The common denominator and the winning key for our future goes through the spectacular nature of our sport, its promotion, that involves the spectator empathetically and emotionally. We must have the courage to leave, but not without sacrifices, outdated and old fashioned formulas, which now belong to the worlds of the past, and to adhere to the dynamic world, understanding that the artistic skating, technical sport, has to place itself at the service of the Show. In this perspective, the Combined, mere additional computation of two distinct competitions, cannot be considered an eight wheels show.
